Our Classes
Our classes are designed to provide instruction in sign language and to develop the skills necessary for basic communication with Deaf individuals. While we operate on a pay-per-class basis, we strongly encourage participants to complete a minimum of six sessions before progressing to Level II. Consistency and practice are crucial for language acquisition.

Zolia Barazarte – Deaf Interpreter | ASL Instructor, and Deaf Community Advocate
Zolia Barazarte is a dedicated Deaf interpreter, American Sign Language (ASL) instructor, and longtime advocate for the Deaf community. Originally from Venezuela, she immigrated to the United States 35 years ago and has devoted her life to advancing communication access, education, and opportunities for Deaf individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Fluent in four languages—Venezuelan Sign Language (VSL), American Sign Language (ASL), English, and Spanish—Zolia brings a valuable multilingual and multicultural perspective to her work. Her extensive experience includes interpreting in legal, immigration, and court settings, ensuring that Deaf individuals can access essential information, understand their rights, and navigate complex procedures with greater confidence and independence.
As an educator, Zolia has taught Deaf Citizenship classes in ASL, helping Deaf immigrants prepare for U.S. citizenship and better understand the naturalization process. She also supports early language development by introducing ASL to children ages 0–5, fostering foundational receptive and expressive communication skills during critical developmental years. Additionally, her experience working with DeafBlind individuals reflects her commitment to meeting the diverse communication needs of the Deaf community.
Throughout her life, Zolia has been a passionate advocate, educator, and mentor, particularly for Deaf immigrants navigating life in the United States. She has also taken on leadership roles within the Hispanic Deaf community, including serving as co-chair of a Hispanic Deaf community organization.
Zolia’s depth of experience, multilingual abilities, and lifelong dedication to Deaf education and advocacy make her a valued member of the Time2ASL team. Through her teaching and community leadership, she is committed to promoting accessible education, strengthening communication, and empowering Deaf individuals to achieve greater independence and inclusion.

Mayra Castro was born Deaf to Cuban immigrant parents and brings a wealth of personal experience, cultural knowledge, and professional expertise to her role as an American Sign Language (ASL) educator and Deaf community advocate.
As an instructor of Beginner and Intermediate ASL, Mayra creates engaging, interactive, and supportive learning environments that emphasize not only language development but also the richness of Deaf culture, identity, and community. Her teaching philosophy encourages students to build confidence, strengthen communication skills, and develop meaningful connections between Deaf and hearing communities.
Beyond the classroom, Mayra has served as an ASL mentor to hearing families raising Deaf children throughout New York City and New York State, helping parents develop communication skills, embrace Deaf culture, and support their children’s language development. Her mentorship also extends to college students at universities throughout Northern New Jersey.
Mayra is the founder of Camp Sol of the Deaf and has worked with New York Deaf Theatre. Her diverse professional background also includes community outreach, event planning and logistics, therapeutic services, and substance abuse counseling. These experiences have strengthened her ability to connect with individuals from different backgrounds and advocate for accessibility, inclusion, and community empowerment.
With a lifelong commitment to the Deaf community, Mayra brings far more than language instruction to her students. She offers cultural insight, real-world experience, and a genuine passion for helping others discover the beauty and value of American Sign Language.
